Here's some advice, some specific to this trip, others to studying abroad in general:
- Layer! Bring an umbrella, a warm hat, gloves, and boots. It's hard to predict the weather, so be prepared for anything.
- Girls, eye contact is taken to mean more. Be aware of your environment.
- Don't be afraid to explore and try new things!
- When making a budget, weigh on the side of more. You'll want to splurge once you're there.
- If you're uptight about schedules, don't be once you step onto the plane. Take a deep breath and go with the flow. You're going to have a blast regardless, but most other countries don't plan as tightly as Americans. Embrace the culture.
- Don't panic in the airport. If a flight is delayed, or you can't find the next gate, again take a deep breath, remain calm, and think about your next step. In the end, you're going to get to your destination.
- Eat everything! As mentioned before, you'll walk it off.
- Be aware of pick pockets, especially on public transportation. Don't keep things in your jacket pockets. Use a money belt, front pants pockets, or a purse that zips (keep the purse in front of you, with a hand on it in high risk situations).
- Use common sense! You're in another country, but people are people. Use respect and good manners. You'll pick up on the culture as you go! Relax, and have fun.
